How to find recipes WITHOUT dairy?

I came across this wonderful site thanks to the mention of it in my favorite computer newsletter, www.WorldStart.com.  I would purchase the full software package if I knew that I could search for recipes based on what is NOT in the ingredient list.  Perhaps that already is a feature but I haven't found how to access it.  Specifically, my elderly mother lives with us and cannot eat any dairy.  Do you know how hard it is to find good, family friendly recipes that don't have any cheese, sour cream, etc??  I would appreciate any direction in this matter!  In the meantime, I'll look forward to perusing this site!  kim

     Welcome to Big Oven!!

I just tested this, so know it works.

In the search box, type the words "no dairy."   In the dropdown, set it to search everywhere.  You'll wind up with about 250 recipes that contain the words no dairy.   I haven't looked further, but other word just might give you even more.

Don't forget that if you purchase the software, you can set up your own recipe boxes, and in that way, you'll be able to store recipes from this site, as well as others, so you could just keep adding to your non dairy collection in that way too.   I don't work for Big Oven/Lakefront Software, but I've been a very happy user/supporter for several years now, and can't say enough good things about it.

Oh... almost forgot to mention;  you could set up a group especially for people who can't tolerate dairy, and members could contribute recipes there too, which should be quite helpful to you.  Just click on the "discuss food" link on your main page to get started.  It's easy!!

     Me again!!  Big Smile

Looks like an even better search option is to type "dairy-free" in the search box and "everywhere" in the dropdown.  A quick look at some of those replies seems to give you more of what you're looking for.  My previous search did bring up items you wouldn't want, because of the word "dairy" standing alone, and the system picking up on that as a keyword.

Hope some of this has been helpful to you.

Thanks Anne.  The "recipes not including X" type search is a popular feature request and we'll be working on it in 2009.  Wish there were more time in the day... we completely agree that this would be useful for a whole host of reasons.  Anne is right that in the meantime, you can find recipes that are tagged with "dairy-free" by simply searching for that tag.  But we agree that's not completely ideal.

    Thanks!
